How to Grow Blueberry Plants in a Container

It’s Earth Day, 2010, tomorrow! If you’re as excited as me, you probably want run out and plant something right now, such as a tree, a shrub or maybe even some fruit. How about a Blueberry Plant?

In this video, Felix from Gurney’s talks about blueberry plants and how to grow them in a container. You’ll want to use a large container, such as a whiskey barrel. This Ka-Bluey blueberry plant is only 3 years old and produced 5 – 6 quarts of blueberries in its second year! If you only have a patio or if your soil type is too alkaline, growing your blueberry plant in a container is the way to go.

How can I send a picture of our sad blueberry plant? We got one from you last fall and it has been in a container on our countertop since then. It grew (mostly from a new branch) then it started getting brown and dried (with soil still being watered) then a few new leaves at the tip grew bright green, but now the whole plant is shriveling and drying and … looking very sad indeed.

I live on the border of zones 4&5. I have a Dwarf Northsky in a container. Can I over winter it outside?

Hi! I was wondering if you could tell me the dimensions of the whiskey barrel that the blueberry bush was planted in that was shown in the April 2010 video. I’m looking for a cheaper version of an authentic barrel 🙁 , and I’m not sure of the size needed. Thanks!
